The Detroit Legal News Profiles John Stewart and His Campaign
June 18, 2010 at 2:22 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a CommentLast week, the Detroit Legal News ran a piece profiling thirty-three year lawyer and former lawmaker John Stewart regarding his Independent campaign for State Senate:
John Stewart, former chairman of both the House Judiciary Committee and the Higher Education Appropriations Committee, likes a good quote. They are everywhere in his law office, which is located in a meticulously restored historic home on Main Street in Plymouth. His collection of quotes runs the gamut from Nobel Prize winners, to legendary football coaches, to political icons. He even has a place for treasured sayings from his late mom.He is particularly fond of a timeless saying from Martin Luther King Jr.“The time is always right to do what is right.”It dovetails nicely with a quote of Stewart’s own.“I don’t have time for anything that is not based on the truth,” Stewart said.

My name is John C. Stewart, and public service has always been a central part of my life. Whether it be my service as State Representative from 2000-2006 or my time as a practicing attorney in Wayne County for the last 35 years, helping to create a better community has always been one of my foremost concerns.
It is with this public service in mind that I announce my independent candidacy in the 7th State Senate District of Michigan.
The people of the 7th need a candidate willing and able to fight for them in Lansing. I think my record shows I have the experience, vision, and independence necessary to make a difference in the State Capitol.
As a former State Representative for 6 years, 2000-2006, I represented more than 1/3 of this Senate District. I am the only candidate who has had 6 years of legislative experience, including service on the Appropriations Committee, which is charged with the responsibility of providing a balanced State Budget. Before I went to Lansing, I served as a Trustee for Plymouth Township, which gave me invaluable experience at the local level.
The best interests of the people of the Senate District must come first. The priorities of the 7th—stable education funding, a secure budget for the future, and job growth—will always be at the top of my legislative agenda in Lansing.
To achieve these important goals for the State of Michigan will require an independent voice. We need a Senator with the independence necessary to put Michigan first. During my time in Lansing, I consistently stood for what I thought was right, even if it didn’t necessarily follow the party line.
